I am amazed that the Rode stereo mini jack is ... if it is only a mono mic is?

If a stereo micro-plug, is the signal on both channels, no preference whatever camcorder. So no problem in your case.
Some older microphones have Mono Male. Since then it depends on your camcorder, whether he accepts and the sound on both channels. Does he not, the right channel mute. I have s.meine mono microphone after a stereo connector soldered to the problem.
