Virtual Dub, Black Picture after compression with xvid

Hello,
I would like the videos of my digital camera (Canon) kompriemieren. That was me Virualdub the program and the xvid codec as a course anywhere playable format equivalent is recommended.
Now I still get only a black picture as a result. The sound is running. Who can help me with my problem give a hint.

Virtualdub correctly or use the player spends xvid synonymous.

I think I've VirualDub correctly. Have kept me s.ein tutorial ... Maybe somebody has a tutorial with which it most certainly is.
Real Player? What would it be? Is Xvid maybe not alzu commonplace for ubiquitous hardware and software? What compression codec would you recommend me for the video still on usual systems?

is not an MPEG-format useful to as a video show to be everywhere? Gibs there other things except what VCD and SVCD on a standard PC as synonymous of DVD players can be played?
