Also very interesting: Ableton Live http://www.ableton.com/ - that falls roughly into the rail of Sony's Acid, but even a little more developed (the program is always next to a full-fledged sequencer).

If you have a free music program under the GPL there looking for the audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/). which is free and quite usable.
If you are looking for something professional or pro tools logic is ok. but they are so saukompliziert that you can hardly work creatively in order, unless you, engage you one sound technician.
supergeil if you do not need the midi is cool edit of syntrillum. there need not be operational before the rumüberlegen stupid hinspeichern where you want, but take a quiet and convenient - as easy as on a tapedeck - and will save on after the creative effusion comfortably into the correct directory. of course, with this you can add innumerable tracks - depending on the computing power between 8 and 64 or even more ...
if the computer is in between the bucket and everything in the temporary buffer store, you can continue after the absturz still cool. just the cool cool edit
how much does the newest version, I do not know.
one more thing: if by chance you are not one of those coal now with the fresh-sounding music to scoop up - take a look at www. neppstar.eu.tt perhaps you want one or the other song synonymous with the free license (LFFI ask). The fangemeinde the free music is getting bigger, so synonymous have more spare her musicians, give away their songs ...

So correct me if I'm wrong, but Cool Edit is a pure audio editing program and is now being marketed Of Adobe (not quite cheap,) as before.
While it is great that you can take it up to 64 tracks - the only question is, what will you take if you have any synths or something similar? It might have to create your own music and not about the editing.
