Avid Express DV:opinions? - "Perry Mitchell" From: John C After one too many disasters with Premiere, I'm heading for higher class software. We're still on a budget (corporate video circumstances) but looking at Avid Express DV as a better quality replacement. Using dual P3 950 chips, 512m ram, 20 & 40 gig 7200 drives. Any comments/opinions on Avid or other equivalent level/priced software? Avid Express DV:opinions? - "Perry Mitchell" Apparently FAST StudioDV is renamed Pinnacle EditionDV, you can read a beta review at: http://www.abcdv.com/editing/pinnacle/editiondv/index.html Perry Mitchell DVCAM Deck--Which One? - "Perry Mitchell" From: Tim Selander What's the problem? If I dub a BetaSP tape that's set up at 7.5 IRE into my DSR20 (and V-DR5 consumer deck for that matter), the resulting tape is right at 7.5 upon playback. If I feed it a 0 IRE tape, it records that at 0 IRE. The deck doesn't take anything away or add anything -- just records what you feed it. I can see why you'd want your camera switchable, but can't see why the deck would need that feature. FireWire patching / multiple devices (was: DVCAM Deck--Whic - Adam Wilt >> I seem to recall that you cannot have two decks connected at once... I >> mean... how >> would FCP know which one to use... If that is still a problem, then some >> type of FW Patchbay would be necessary--yes? While 1394 allows 63 nodes, the vast majority of implementations in VTRs and NLEs work in baby duckling mode: whatever the device sees first on startup is mommy, and that device will only talk to mommy thereafter. To date the only DV devices we've found that allow for multiple devices on one bus are (a) Omneon's video server components, (b) Panasonic DVCPRO decks (with manually-settable channel assignments), and (c) Canopus ADVC-100 A/D-D/A boxes. > And when you want to dub between the two decks? You can't leave the > computer > attached to either deck. In olden days people found that two decks connected through the Radius DV card could dub back and forth as long as EditDV / MotoDV were not running. I haven't tried it lately using built-in FireWire in Macs or OHCI cards in PCs with Microsoft drivers. Markertek (http://www.markertek.com) has both patch bays and switchers for FireWire. We agree to copy each others footage so each will have coverage from both cameras. My question, is it possible to copy my footage using my camera thru IEEE1394 cable to his PAL VX1000? And is the reverse possible (his PAL footage thru his PAL camera to my NTSC VX1000)? I don't mind taking home PAL footage (can have it transcoded or converted later) but wanted to know if the "dub" will work and will it be lossless? Thanks HZ Panasonic wet-dry lubricant issues - "Crittenden, Jan" > 1. Someone asked this earlier, but can you shoot Panasonic > mini DV tapes > with different lubricants (wet - dry) and have no problems? There is less of a problem with wet-dry lubrication than there is wet-wet. > Or is wet to > dry to wet a problem regardless of brand? There is only one brand that has dry and that is Panasonic, the wet lubrications are everything else. > > 2. When did this wet-dry incompatibility issue become common knowledge? This is not a dry-wet problem, wet-wet is the problem. It has been a problem from the very inception, although it took some time before it was discovered what was the source of the problem. Best advice it to choose one formulation of tape and stick with it. Jan> > RextRT/Storm: dual cpu or no? - Jon Burkhart Well done Randy! In my book, that's some very good thinking. Boniface Ok here is the problem, I am trying to figure out a way to capture video via a Aurora Fuse card and capture simultaneous audio via a Pro Tools interface on a Quicksilver Mac running 9.2.1 (Remember, these Macs have no hardware audio in.) There seems to be no way to access any sound card in the sound manager. I have Digidesigns Direct IO extension but that does nothing for me. Any one out there have a work around?? I know there are USB audio in gizmos for the Mac, but will these allow me to do what I want to do? Do they come with software that place access to the inputs in the sound manager? (I always loathe the idea of putting more extensions in my system if I don't have to) Plus, I have multiple (4) audio channels I would like to bring in at as high a quality as possible. I am dubbing from a Sony Beta 75 deck I tried capturing with FCP 2 and the Fuse capture app but alas, the card option is not even available. I can capture video and then go back and capture the audio in second pass if I want to and then match it up, but that just seems....well so darn ..... inelegant. Thanks in advance for any ideas. Time code problems on camera - "Perry Mitchell" From: Blain The editor has been complaining that my footage drops in and out of DVCam mode to DV mode and that the timecode is not consistent. I have checked the camera and everything is set as it should be. The only difference is that the editor has requested that it be freerun timecode and Drop-Frame. I made those changes but they should have nothing to do with changing mode and with timecode problems. It's a brand new PD-150. Any ideas on what might cause this? WFM/Vectorscope Recommendation - Adam Wilt Perry sez: > I maintain that a software monitor on the actual digital 'signal' is > potentially far more accurate than an add-on device looking at the analog > output of the deck(s). True. For setting your digital levels, this is the way to go. Be aware however that not all pixels may be sampled -- FCP 3 only reads every 16th line, so small details can get missed. An external WFM is still valuable for seeing what's coming OUT of your DV deck and into your VHS machine or distribution amp, etc. > Ideally Tek (or a rival) would offer a unit with direct DV input Hamlet were showing this 18 months ago at IBC. Did it not come to market? Good advice by the way. On a similar subject, I use a -14dB (that's MINUS 14 dB) tone and John Jackman's DV adaptation of SMPTE bars for tone on my DV timeline or DV master tape that will be eventually used to make copies back to analog like sending my DV or DVCAM master tape to a dub house to make VHS dups. Plus, I don't care for the artificial > frame rate effect. It looks odd to me. Remember, it is not a progressive > image and never will be (it's one field doubled up and not both fields > combined). On the XL1 and GL1/XM1, Frame Mode is done with "vertical pixel shift", interpolating luma data from the green channel offset one scan line from the R & B channels, so it's about halfway between a full frame and a doubled field in terms of resolution. It's not "true" progressive scan but it's a lot better than single field doubling, which is what the VX100/VX2000/PD150/TRV-900 and their ilk do in slow shutter modes! The only problem I see with this is that if you want to use that footage in another production, save the tape as you would not want to use it from the playback from the DVD.
