I posted here and elsewhere asking for feedback on the ProMax DA MAX and Laird 5500. No word yet. It's not XDV per se, but the convertor boxes that do the restriping. I just haven't used Premiere for work since my purple and grey friend said hello. Anyway, the ProMax box does this. Taken from their literature: "Tape Deck Control: The much-requested feature of tape deck control including time-code re-striping is included. Tape deck commands such as stop, rewind and play can be invoked from the application software program. These commands are sent via FireWire to DA-MAX+ where they are translated and forwarded to the tape deck over an RS-422 connection. Additionally, during the conversion of analog video to DV the time-code from the analog tape can be re-striped into the DV data stream via the RS-422 connection. This unique feature allows the preservation of the time code." Ewww... pretty cool, if it really works. Sara put up a flag for me, but Charles McConathy states improvements. I dislike being a guinea pig (unless it's someone else's funds... hahaha). The Laird 5500 does RS422 deck control, but I don't know about restriping the TC on converting to DV. Friday morning is the first chance I'll have to call both companies and find out the current status. The ProMax box has some more input formats and is 1/2 the price of the 5500. Still the ProMax at is a major purchase for a one woman shop. I'll be happy to pass on my findings and report back after the purchase. I've got to make a decision pretty soon, so it won't be long. Offlining in XDV 3, with darn good EDL support for the bigger Avid's seems very cool. It'd be nice to keep my VX2000 tucked in safety rather than on my desktop as a transcoder for my client monitor. I can't live without that, nor my clients. Valerie Safe framing and cut-off. - Jon Burkhart Thomas the only way to know how much cropping the LCD monitor is showing is to run some tests. It's very doubtful that it's WYSIWYG. Few monitors can show the entire area scanned by the camera chip. You might frame a card with your camera and place one ruler horizontally across the center of the card and another ruler vertically across the center of the card. Make careful notes about what marks on the rulers are just barely visible in the LCD screen at the bottom, top, left and right. Record this and import it into your NLE and look at it with your software. Then you can compare the area of the entire raster, the safe areas for important information and what you actually saw on the LCD screen. Hope this makes sense. Good luck. I'm curious as to what the new Liquid systems will really put out. Pinnacle does have some umpf, and the BBC was big on FAST. EDL compatibility may be a make or break. Although, I'd learn any system for the right $$$ job, but in US production houses? Valerie unless you are number 1 or number 2 (aside) - Jon Burkhart WordPerfect is still on my machine and used most often. Lotus 1-2-3 is STILL my spreadsheet of choice. I "Excel" only rarely. It's a shame to see great software fall by the wayside, but so it goes. That's enough whining from this Old Fart. Onward and Upward!
