DV Codecs and compression ..Which combination produces the b - "Perry Mitchell"

DV is color mapped at 4:1:1 in NTSC and 4:2:0 for PAL (yes I know you all
know that but stick with me) but MPEG2 as used for DVD is 4:2:0 for both. I
had therefore naively thought that transcoding from PAL DV to MPEG2 would be
a relatively transparent process if the datarate was high enough. I have
recently done some DVD production from animation (using After Effects) and
one of my MPEG2 encoders can only take DV files. I was rather disappointed
with the quality and tried some other encoders from the DV file with no
great improvement. I then tried encoding the MPEG2 using an interim QT
Animation codec and I saw a dramatic improvement.
Now this was animation content and it may not be nearly so obvious on camera
content. I think the bottom line is that you cannot take anything for
granted and you need to test every alternate procedure and judge the results
empirically. To paraphrase - You get what you see!

fcp 3.0 edl's into Avid? - "Perry Mitchell"

From: Paul Boyer
I'm in a bit of a jam. I've offlined a project in fcp3.0 and the client is
asking about onlining on Avid (Because of a contractual obligation). Does
the
avid import any of the export edl's from fcp 3.0? I'm on the digest, so if
there's an answer, please reply directly and I'll post to the group asap.
Thanks.

Hard Drives and Backup - "Perry Mitchell"

From: Laura
Hello,
I am new to the list and wanted to introduce myself. First and foremost I do
web design and ad design. I'm a 37 yr old stay at home mom who has made her
"tech head" sort of mind go to work for her. I've always enjoyed creating
and computers; I put the two together a couple of years ago. I also go to
school part time. I have just recently started adding some basic DV
equipment and software, and will be adding more shortly. Please don't giggly
hysterically or roll your eyes if I ask some rather "newbie" style
questions.
I just added a Western Digital 80gig, 7200rpm, 8mb buffer, for DV editing.
My primary is a 15.3 gig Western Digital. I will say this: Whenever I have
a question WD responds. I've had great service with them.
My question is: What are you folks using for back up? I really think I need
to invest in an exterior back up source incase I am working on a project and
the whole thing crashes. What say you?
