DVL-Digest 502 - Postings: Index 4:1:1 and treats it as if Shooting lightening Why 1/100th shutter speed inst you're not gonna believe this. 4:1:1 and treats it as if - "Perry" Thanks be to Guy for telling us the way it really is! What is really confusing most folk is the lack of clear statements of 'intent' with many of the arguments. It is clearly nonsense to suggest that encoding in 4:2:2 is not going to be better than encoding in 4:1:1. What was at debate though was AFTER encoding in 4:1:1, is there any advantage to then transcode to 4:2:2. Some of us are maintaining that there isn't, UNLESS the transcoding is done with sufficient extra quality over that done anyway to achieve any practical compositing. I strongly suggest that this will only be the case with a pretty duff decoder. By the way, I took the Pxxs out of Steve for 'Composting' but John used it as well; please somebody tell me this is a real US version of compositing and I'll have a smile for a week!! (and I'll tell you what it means in UK!) By the way (2), codecs are invented to fool the eye into accepting less data rate with no serious loss of picture quality. All bets are off if you then try using them for chroma key. Perry Mitchell Video Facilities http://www.perrybits.co.uk/ Shooting lightening - "Perry" I think the secret is to expose for the background and the lightning will take care of itself. It's gonna be way into the white clip so it won't come out colored whatever balance you set. Perry Mitchell Video Facilities http://www.perrybits.co.uk/ Why 1/100th shutter speed inst - "Perry" Enrico: I think you may be getting confused with movie camera shutters. A video camera shutter shortens the full field exposure time, so if you have it turned off, you default to a 1/50 'shutter' time in PAL. Earlier cameras used to have only a few pre-set values, but most pro cameras now allow effectively continuous adjustment to fine tune a PC display. The JVC GY-DV500 has 2 modes that are selected in the menu; either a few presets or continuous. It is useful to have 1/60 on a PAL camera to cope with power supply strobing in US, and also basic VGA PC screens. Perry Mitchell Video Facilities http://www.perrybits.co.uk/ you're not gonna believe this. - "Perry" I am at the moment listening to a story on NPR about a "capsule video camera" that a person can swallow, and it transmits video to a receiver/monitor during its route through the body. The story was from a gastroenterologist (sp?) at a hospital in London. I don't think I have anything more to say about it, other than I did, indeed, hear it.
