"Edgy" JVC GY- DV500U Images - "Perry"

a slightly "cut out" look. People or objects have a slight edge or
outline. ((Perry MItchell wrote a review when the camera first came out
saying, "The pictures (from the DV500 didn't have) any trace of the
edginess that often mars cheaper cameras." )) I am a big fan of this camera
and I don't have anything like Perry's technical knowledge, but to my eye
the image could use some adjusting. (Perry's camera had a better lens, the
Fuji 17x, but I'm not sure that is the difference.)
Would lowering the detail setting smooth the images? Is there some other
steps I should take?<
I quite agree with you Ron, as standard the DV500 has a larger than life
look. I understand it is designed to appeal particularly to Wedding
Videographers straight out of the box (with subsequent dubbing to VHS). The
important point is that because the processing is clean it is easy to
correct this 'look'.
I found that turning the 'Sharpness' to the highest frequency (of 3) and
setting the level down a little produced better results to my eyes. I also
preferred it with the 'Color Matrix' turned off. These settings are in the
menus.
In another published Review, I showed it was possible to closely match the
pictures from the GY-DV500 to the respected Sony DSR-300, so I don't think
you'll be disappointed.

That's almost certainly the thing to do. Give it a try.

Which "level" are you talking about lowering?<
Sorry, lazy engineer's talk. I should have said 'Detail' frequency and I
meant of course the "level" of the 'Detail Adjustment'.
In UK "level" is a term meaning 'control setting'. In Japan they use the
term "volume".

Found this in the back of DV Mag: http://www.digirom.com or call 212-730-2111.
I haven't used 'em; just saw the ad.
Cheers,
Adam Wilt
