DVL-Digest 822 - Postings: Index 1394, Microsoft, Coffee, and the nominal fee that went poof 1394, Microsoft, Coffee, and the nominal fee that went poof - "Perry" Bertel: >Far from a platform war, Ladies & Gentlemen, just a bit of history. Or, as they say, just my 25 cents.< One other titbit if I remember right; Apple didn't even start from scratch, but 'bought' IEEE-1394 off the shelf. It was a defunct standard that hadn't gone anywhere. Presumably it was cheaper that way. Reminded me of a pal who started a company when the appropriate UK Civil Servants were on strike, and he therefore couldn't register his chosen company name. He bought a disused name off the shelf as a temporary measure and is still using it today 20 years later! What is interesting (at least to me) about IEEE-1394 is how much is Apple and how much is Sony? The latter went through a phase of wanting a low profile in terms of 'forcing' standards onto the industry, and yet patently they were the innovators of much of the early DV use of IEEE-1394. To be fair to Apple, they seem to have made a much better job of incorporating Firewire (however belatedly) than Bill's boys from Seattle!
