My explanation for why this look is so popular is a psychological one. Warm (reddish) and cool (bluish) light to speak with us different (komplimentäre) feelings.
The famous example of the solitary wanderer in the cold winter, which looks through a window as a family by candlelight and fireside sitting around a Christmas tree.
Blue is in our subconscious for cold, alien, distant, restlessness, unnatural, desolation.
Yellow-orange for security, home, joy, warmth.
A blue face (avatar) suggests fear and distance. It is not really "warm" so that a red (orange-yellow-red) colored face support, first, the skin tones and secondly, it evokes warm feelings.

Is it the look you should always use? No. But when you understand why and when it should be used, then use it. Otherwise create the look the story / mood calls for and then you can never go wrong. So everything is actually said on the subject.
