I would like to save my negatives in front of further deterioration un seeking a bargain, but qualitatively adequate solution. My new scanner HP Officejet 4500 has, unfortunately, no transparency adapter scans and probably synonymous only optical 1200 dpi. So the question is a negative / slide scanner. There are huge price differences. What is important? In which optical resolution should be at least scanned?
The Paul.

Hello, I can not soo much about this but one thing I had time (several years ago already) to the slide-scanning the then disgustingly expensive Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite bought 5400, then probably one of the 'best' in the market.
Do not even have much to be scanned, but the thing was a totally annoying property: it took an incredibly long time before the scan was finished. The rödelte rödelte and in slow motion toward infinity before him.
So if you scan a lot and want to have some patience, it would be ne thing to be aware that you should click.
Here I have some general information on the scanning resolution, which I had then collected together:
(Beginning of quote:) "Of course, a 5400 dpi optical resolution also a marketing issue just as many people imagine that a calculator with 3 gigahertz processor speed must be considered a Calculator with 2.5 gigahertz, without other components such as memory. Front Side Bus or view hard drive keep many a slide scanner with 5400 dpi dpi simply for better than a device with 4000 or 2700th
But there is a valid reason synonymous for 5,400 dpi resolution: a film scanner always delivers the best results when working with its optical resolution, the half or quarter, because then the step size of the CCD sensor simply doubled or quadrupled. A 4000 dpi scanner thus provides the best results when 4000 dpi, 2000 dpi or 1000 dpi sets. At 2700 dpi resolution scan If a 4000 dpi scanner with the smallest step size and then interpolate. A 5400 dpi scanner thus provides the best results in the widespread Resolutionvon 2700 dpi and 5400 dpi Resolutionvon its very fine. "(End quote)

The Nikon Coolscan devices have a very good reputation!
Good info at: www.filmscanner.info
If you would only want to digitize your existing archives once and no new material is added, then the service is synonymous of a scanning service to consider. It is also true: not the cheapest should be ...
Many synonymous buy the equipment to scan their archives and then sell the units back on ebay and are therefore cheaper than the commission of third-party ...

The Coolscan is good for slides, but not for negatives. Due to the extremely sharp LED Lighting is the reversal of contrast and steepening of each, but each really synonymous fine dust particles imaged in the positive white. Here one desperately needs a diffuse background light in the scanner. The Coolscan takes about 1 minute for a 2700 dpi scan for each negative. Generally, a private scan do not work out, keep the negatives when stored for a long time, probably longer than digital storage. Scan and if they did, rather then give an order s.einen commercial scan service, it will save you very much s.stupide wasted time.

Hello!
I have since the year 2003 with a Nikon Coolscan IV, many, many (so far about 6000), slides and negatives digitized, and am still in the process (family / relatives / friends). Takes a long time, I will quote per negative about 3 min. Slide a little faster. Can actually make only sickness comes times home or reorganize incidentally surfing or.
The Coolscan V is probably a lot quicker I had then taken better but I had saved as occupational beginners yet much Money and so ultimately (retrospective s.falschen end).
Importance of an automatic scraper or Fusselerkennung / removal (ICE). This saves a lot of time in post. The dust detection is with a Niko device but unfortunately not in black and white and probably not synonymous (but luckily I had not synonymous) with the Kodak slides with the special coating / development, I find the name is not now.
I scan the images with the maximum Scsannerauflösung of 2900dpi, which correspond, according to former Test in the c't about effective 2800 and therefore much better than many cheap scanner, the advertised 3600dpi and more in the previous test were significantly below 2000.
With the Coolscan IV, I scan with 4050 x 2700 pixels about or slightly below. Depending on the type of camera. The thick enough, the more old pictures give eh 'is not applicable.
Good color negatives and color slides of my father from the 60s are still very good, cheap department store movies (my grandma) from the 80s have some grottig colors or are already largely faded. As my scan action came just before close.
Den Coolscan IV I synonymous get on my secondary Calculator Notebook with 32bit Windows 7 run still to. Whether it's with the 64bit version is still synonymous, I do not know.
Niko The scanners are used synonymous nor very expensive, since production was stopped 2009th When I look around on ebay, I would think probably at that original price of 700 ¬ release.
In your place I would take the Nikon Coolscan V and possibly sell at the end of the scan action again.
Best regards, The KLF

With good storage, the negatives you have to endure. Or are the already battered of fungus?
