Better image quality, greater ease of use.
Possible drawback:
Not everyone has a DVD player ...
And perhaps even synonymous, the maximum time (VHS 4-5h, heavily dependent on the used DVD blank (DL) and the compression.

Hello,
for television viewing, I have both a DVD recorder as synonymous VHS and SVHS recorder. My experiences are as follows (the disadvantages arising partly) from the benefits of the other system:
+ Very good compatibility with other (S) VHS recorders
+ Possible long record of consistent quality
+ Sound quality comparable with VHS (HiFi Stereo Recorder)
+ Quick receptive (cassette pure, 1 sec later, the device had records)
+ Cartridges are cheap to get
+ VHS tapes are relatively insensitive
Benefits DVD (RAM): + Timeshifting possible
+ Very good image quality (up to 2 hours recording time)
+ Random medium (no Spulzeiten, advertising breaks are hastily skipped)
