On my Canon XM1 (synonymous certainly true for other "high quality" models) I once determined experimentally that the ground is roughly ISO160 to ISO200 sensitivity. You can then switch on a strengthening in several stages, each corresponding 3 dB is always 1 f-stop. So if the basic sensitivity of ISO 200 would be +6 dB position would result in an increase to ISO800.
"Cheap" camcorder, unfortunately, auto gain control and this control can not. Simply step up more, once the largest aperture is no longer sufficient.
