SonyHDR-HC1E: 3 million pixels
Panasonic NV-GS400EG-S: 3 x 1,070,000 pixels

... 3 x 470.000 pixels. Other camcorders of the same price range or even a lower price range but have significantly more pixels. A video image in "standard definition" measures always 720 × 576 pixels, which corresponds to a total pixel count of 414,720. The XL2 also has enough pixels to create a proper PAL video image.
In addition, the more pixels a CCD image sensor has, or / and the smaller the area of a CCD imager is, the worse are the features of the camcorder in dim lighting.
The megapixel mania has therefore not necessarily advantages for videographers.
