Can someone please explain what an intelligent or passive photo shoe is? Maybe someone knows a link so synonymous with a picture that Laiin can imagine.

Look under "hot shoe" flash contact ", etc.
Passive is the hot shoe when he was only as a holder for accessories used intelligently if he contacts through a meaningful combination with the native accessories (Microphone, Light, Flash ,...) received.
Small tip yet:
Make sure that the "accessory shoe" really a
hot shoe, otherwise isses vinegar with standard accessories.
Adapters are-if at all available, then very, very expensive.
