Live video via Firewire works - but is there a way to transmit live video via USB? Similarly, a webcam, but with optical zoom.

Sure there is. Depending on your claim and what you plan, you can use a USB video grabber of a composite (RCA) input and has to take the entrance with VLC (Video Lan Client - or known?) Tap. I myself own a HDMI input card of AVerMedia. The synonymous dieversen has more inputs. Which is synonymous pretty fast. some others are splashing around a delay.
What do you mean with Zoom? Do you want to remotely control the camera?
