That is the widespread myth that MPEG4 is compressed more than for example, MPEG2.
Quite the contrary. It is significantly more efficient than MPEG2, and it results in a lower data rate. That is a huge difference, and the aforementioned processing power based on a currently used in most computers do not yet adapted from HW and SW architecture.
If one were to compare AVC on a GoP-level (Which does not really work because there is no GoP structure more), we find 7x longer I-frame, as it as for example in a GoP 15, occurs in HDV. AVC, then, is almost 7x less compressed than MPEG2. Only the tool are more complicated, but synonymous for fine and varied than in MPEG2.
