Because the codec can be ever so well, without a strategic partnership is in the back you can hardly reach the critical mass. It would take at least be able to play the best (HD) DVD player, the synonymous VP7, otherwise the whole will nüscht.
In these areas, Divx, VP1 and H.264 have been next (because even abgenickt as the upcoming standard and already practically poured in hardware).
