How did you get to scan the material? 3CCD or Flying Spot? In 3CCD, I can imagine that the quality is not particularly good (although I've seen of colleagues S8 footage filmed in good quality).
Wagner offers a free tasting samples. Then maybe we can compare how the same material which looks like. If the differences are striking, I would scold clever with them. In the area there are many vultures that just such a draufhalten Mustek camcorder (or worse).
