With the beginner-friendly tool TMPGEnc recommended that it all works beautifully, but I can if I do. Avi (MPEG 4 format with 640x480) to convert to MPEG 2, only one Resolutionvon choose 720x576 or 576x720, but for my television (and probably synonymous for most others) is too big and me so that the edges and some subtitles are cut off.
Is there any possibility to watch the videos with TMPGEnc to convert to 640x480 with a Resolutionvon be converted?
If not, what alternative I have s.anderen programs?

720x576 is the normal DVD resolution, which is not too big for any Television. Your problem is an entirely different, namely that television never show the whole picture, but always the outer edge "off." But this is always the case, if you do not want, so you do not encode the video smaller, but a black border around the video set, for example, goes with VirtualDub, and then spend 720x576.

Can it be that your articles simply too close s.den edge searched? Look here at what is with the term "title safe" is all about:

Danke, ich hab mir the latest, stable version of VirtualDub concerned (glaub 1.6), but do not function, with which I am the Vid a border can add. Have already looked through all the help and ask for help.

The whole picture is with a black border on 720x576 enlarged.
What resolution but must have the actual movie, which is now black circles in the middle, to an optimum, to obtain unabgeschnittenes Picture (ie to avoid the overscan)?
