My mother (73) needs a new Television. Virtually every reasonably modern (LCD) Television has a "Scale Mode", in which, regardless of native transmission format, always have the entire (16:9 -) display area is filled. How often that comes before or since, that you have to change the format? The whole public broadcasters and most private synonymous shine but for standard, so that the tuner automatically switches between 4:3 and 16:9. Only very rarely even get some movies in letterbox format, but this is real exceptions.
So long as man with DVB-S, DVB-T and DVB-C receives, I do not really see the problem.
My father (82) has a Television with DVB-S tuner, and because the works properly. to cope with the few letterboxed shows he is still with bars all around must look, (this happens maybe once every two weeks). We have tested the car synonymous zoom (where the Television zooms basis of the image content itself), but that was just annoying.

If you have digital reception, the automatic switchover works of 16:9 to 4:3 in the appropriate setting of the TV, because you need never endure breitgezogene broadcasts. (Unfortunately, many Television s.Werk or by the technician on the "Breitzieh default mode" because this is to prevent a "burn" the Pillar Strip. Luckily, you can stop this nonsense but with all TVs anywhere.)
Who analogue (cable television) has had, from Breitziehen anyway, because there is always yes 16:9 broadcast as 4:3 letterbox, so there would then be synonymous breitziehen 16:9 programs including black bar. Instead of Breitziehens you would stop here rather a solid 16:9 zoom lens and then 4-3 but would cut off shipments up and down.
So you should absolutely avoid analogue in combination with 16:9 TVs.
