Is that with styrofoam plates? You can soft (ie large) light either by a large reflection or just with a translucent surface. The Styrofoam plate would be the version to reflect, and if you a softbox is too expensive, could you look for the variant to the show through a synonymous batten frame building, the diffusion film with you or silk covering. It is always the danger of fire sure headlights are very hot. So distances comply.
