VHS would have been interesting times ... Otherwise, I have always just MiniDV - and Hi8 tapes to repair here. :-)

Knitter magnetic tapes of all kinds to get the same method with smooth, like their granny silk blouse.
Damp kitchen towel (smooth cotton, no Frotte) druff tape, same situation damp kitchen towel and then iron it. Level one is sufficient in most cases.
Just do not take Omis old cast iron. Then the magnetization is gone. Dear newer with VA or Alusohle.
