The new horror-sci-fi film "Annihilation" ("Erasure") by the British director Alex Garland ("Ex Machina") was highly praised by the critics ("A furious masterpiece, images flooding the brain, meditations, a soundtrack in perpetuity","one of the years best films"). But the dis"Annihilation" with Natalie Portman: on Netflix instead of cinematributor Paramount has decided not to release the 40.4 million dollar production outside the USA, but to release it on Netflix. "Annihilation" is about a troop of five military-equipped women (one of them played by Natalie Portman) who are supposed to explore a mysterious zone ("the shimmer"), which threatens to swallow ever more areas and from which nobody has come back. But the film quickly goes beyond its simple story and revolves around themes such as artificial intelligence, identity and cloning. Actually, the film with its visually stunning scenes would have been ideal for the big screen, but on the basis of test screenings in which the audience judged the film to be too intellectual and complicated, Paramount decided, after the director&s refusal to cut the finale, to show the film only in the USA in the cinema, but to sell the worldwide rights to Netflix with its 117 million subscribers worldwide. "Annihilation" Something similar had already happened with "The Cloverfield Paradox", the second successor of "Cloverfield" - the producers had also decided to sell the film to Netflix. For cinemas, this trend could be worrying: Movies that do not correspond to Hollywood formula cinema and do not give rise to high income ("annihilation" came from a modest 11 million dollars income in the USA on the opening weekend) will no longer be shown in the cinema, but will be sold to a film portal such as Netflix. Cineasts with a crying and laughing eye: in the future, unusual films may be less likely to be shown in cinemas, but they are no longer limited to art-house cinemas in a few cities and can be watched by anyone everywhere - provided they have an Internet connection and a Netflix subscription. Netflix "Annihilation" can be seen on Netflix since March 10th - the pictures (and the sophisticated sound) can best be enjoyed on a big TV or better still a beamer with a good sound system. more infos at bei www.netflix.com deutsche Version dieser Seite: "Annihilation" mit Natalie Portman: auf Netflix statt im Kino |
