The two new compact cameras are based on a 1.0-inch 20 MP stacked sensor and weigh 340 /304 grams. Both cameras are based on 1:1.8-2.8 zoom lenses, with the G5 X Mark II offering a focal length of 8.8-44mm and the G7 X Mark III "only" 8.8-36.8mm. An integrated ND filter should help against overexposure with the aperture open. For further differentiation, the PowerShot G5 X Mark II features an extendable electronic OLED viewfinder with 100% image coverage and 2.36 million pixels.
A 30fps RAW burst mode sounds interesting, which can perhaps be misused for experimental filming. But even otherwise the new models do not sound unexciting for filmmakers.
Because in 4K images without crop should be possible with the full sensor surface. Both optical and digital image stabilization can be used when filming. In HD, it is even possible to shoot at up to 120 frames per second. Output via HDMI should be possible "clean". And an external microphone can be connected via a mini jack.
Via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth the camera is wirelessly connected to social media channels and with the new live streaming function (only PowerShot G7X Mark III) you can even feed Youtube live. This requires a one-time activation of the YouTube streaming service via Canon Image Gateway. Afterwards the camera receives a direct entrance, in order to be able to stream live at any time over WLAN.
The PowerShot G5 X Mark II will be available from August 2019 at a price of 929.00. The PowerShot G7 X Mark III will be available on the German market in the same period at a price of 779.00 Euro.
