AMD is focusing on a single card strategy for its current GPU generation. This means no high-end graphics cards for gamers and creators from AMD in the near future. Instead, this GPU season starts with only two card designs in two series: AMD Radeon RX 9060 and RX 9060 XT, as well as the AMD Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT.
However, since AMD surprisingly announced at CES that the new cards would be presented in detail at a later event, there is much speculation about the performance and price of AMD's new mid-range offerings.
AMD's Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 XT are expected to be available soon
Now, surprisingly, entries have appeared in the TechpowerUP GPU Database that are highly informative for video creators, providing a good initial assessment of the upcoming performance.
The biggest surprise is that not only the Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT, but also the RX 9060 XT, are said to be based on the Navi 48 chip. However, the latter only uses a 192-bit memory interface, while both 9070 models offer the full 256-bit bus.
According to TechpowerUP, the RX 9070 XT will only differ through a higher clock speed, reaching almost 3 GHz in boost. However, since Navi 48 on the upcoming cards only supports GDDR6, the two 9070 models offer a maximum memory bandwidth of approximately 625 GB/s.
Nvidia, on the other hand, is already using GDDR7 in this generation, which is why the current cards perform better here despite a narrower bus: Even the currently smallest RTX 5070 will achieve 672 GB/s. For Resolve (excluding AI effects), TFLOPS and memory bandwidth are usually the most important factors, which allows for a first mid-range ranking based on the TechpowerUP values:
If the TechpowerUP entries are accurate, AMD will have to price the Radeon RX 9070 XT below the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 to remain attractive to creators. The price of the latter is already fixed at or €649, which would need to be undercut. Currently, there are rumors of a starting price of for AMD's top mid-range model...
