Adobe After Effects gets ACES workflow via OpenColorIO

Actually, it&s almost unimaginable that it wasn&t an issue at Adobe for so long, but since yesterday there is a new beta version of After Effects that supports ACES via integrated colour management.

ACES stands for Academy Color Encoding System and is considered the standard for standardised, digital colours for large film projects. ACES can now cover the entire process of film production - from image capture, editing, VFX, presentation and archiving to later remastering. This also includes the management of colour workflows and the creation of presets for the delivery and archiving of films.

Among other things, ACES is supposed to enable a seamless exchange of cinematographic works, regardless of the source, and to provide uniform interfaces for the entire procedure. This goes so far that even camera profiles for production can be integrated into a complete ACES workflow. If you are interested in more, you can find

In Adobe&s After Effects, ACES has now been integrated via OpenColorIO (OCIO) as a colour management engine in a first beta and the adjustable parameters seem to provide the most important typical ACES settings now.

The traditional Adobe colour management engine (which uses ICC profiles) has to be switched to OpenColorIO in a project menu for this.

Afterwards, working, composition, display and export colour spaces can be assigned.

A plug-in effect "OCIO Color Space Transform" has also been thought of. This is a colour space conversion effect implemented with the OpenColorIO engine that can be used anywhere in the composition. This can work with CDL or LUT files. Complex 3D LUT interpolations are optionally performed tetrahedral, but this requires a supported(end) GPU.

Many a compositor has been eagerly waiting for this ACES integration, because it allows media to be transferred without big question marks, especially for complex projects in larger teams...
