Adobe Frame.io V4: Camera-to-Cloud with Canon, Nikon and Leica

[08:20 Mon,21.October 2024   by Thomas Richter]

Adobe has released a new version of its cloud-based collaboration platform Frame.io in conjunction with MAX 2024. Version 4, which has been available as a beta since April 2024, is described by Adobe as the biggest update to date, bringing a completely redesigned and revamped user interface for a consistent user experience across all platforms, which is supposed to be faster and more intuitive than before. In addition, the update introduces new camera-to-cloud partnerships and integrations for Canon, Leica, and Nikon cameras, as well as improvements in asset management, workflows, and the review and approval processes.

Here are the new features in detail:

Organization by Metadata

The new metadata model enables the organization of assets using predefined or custom metadata such as star ratings, due dates, or media type. For example, if casting is done with the help of Frame.io, actor names, roles, ratings, and agent contacts can be added. This metadata then allows for a highly individualized selection of assets using so-called collections. Collections are flexible, saved views of all assets that allow media to be dynamically selected, filtered, grouped, and sorted. Collections are always updated in real-time, allowing for the organization of all project files in any combination without creating duplicates of assets, which would typically contribute to version chaos and take up unnecessary storage space.

New Streaming Player

The new streaming player is designed to provide a seamless, smooth experience when viewing media. Frame-accurate hover scrubbing provides precise access to any part of a video, with a high-resolution preview during scrubbing. The HLS streaming player with adaptive bitrate is intended to provide an "outstanding playback experience with minimal buffering and interruptions."

New File Types

Frame.io now supports a wide variety of file types in photography, design, and documents, providing a unified platform for creative teams to organize, share, and engage with media. Additionally, a completely revamped comparison viewer and the review and comment system have been introduced, offering more specific feedback through click annotations, emojis, comment attachments, optimized hashtags, and smarter @mentions.

iOS and iPad Apps

The redesigned iOS and iPad apps also allow for mobile project work. Features like TPN Gold Shield, SOC 2 Type 2, and ISO 27001 certifications ensure data security. A new workspace page for iOS with new project cards and a project page now offers the same asset configuration controls as the web or desktop versions. A full-fledged file management system also allows renaming, moving, copying, exporting, and deleting files and folders on iOS devices. The same new commenting features are available here, such as adding attachments as references and emoji reactions. Collections and full sharing with all configuration and branding controls are now also available on iOS.

Lightroom

New is the direct connection of Frame.io to Adobe Lightroom. Photographers can now automatically transfer all images uploaded through Frame.io&s Camera-to-Cloud to their Lightroom account. The service also enables new workflows, allowing photographers to select images in Frame.io and transfer their best shots to Lightroom for editing. Editors can then access the images in real-time, regardless of location, and once retouched or edited, upload them back to Frame.io for delivery or distribution.

New Camera-to-Cloud Partners: Canon, Nikon, and Leica

Also announced were further major partners for the C2C (Camera-to-Cloud) ecosystem: Canon, Nikon, and Leica have announced upcoming integrations to bring C2C functionality to their products, allowing content to be transferred directly from the camera to the cloud. Canon plans to add C2C support for the new C400 and C80 later this year, while Nikon will release a corresponding firmware update in the first half of 2025 for the Z6 III, Z8, and Z9, enabling synchronization via Nikon&s NX MobileAir app, and Leica plans to enable C2C upload for the SL3 starting in 2025.

In addition, teams can automatically centralize and organize media from multiple cameras, review daily footage, and create optimized file transfers to remote editors or staff—all in one place without having to download or transport physical media. Other updates include batch uploads, which are now monitored from a central location and run in a separate thread, so the interface is no longer slowed down by slow uploads or downloads.

Comment Functionality

Comments can now be pinned to any point or pixel in a video, image, or design file frame, and hashtags allow comments to be indexed, making them easier to track. There is also a new option to add attachments to a comment. Finally, it is now possible to react to comments with emojis. Comments can also be filtered by priority, and each comment now has a link that can be used to direct someone to a specific conversation. Using the new C2C workflow for real-time logging, stakeholders and creatives can also leave comments during the shoot, providing editors with real-time feedback.

What is Frame.io?

Frame.io is an online tool that allows filmmakers, video producers, and creative teams to collaborate seamlessly, provide feedback, and manage video projects efficiently—all in the cloud. Frame.io has grown from a pure collaboration platform for video post-production to a tool used for photography, design, social media, live events, sports, and even e-commerce. It is now used by more than four million customers.
