Adobe discontinues Prelude media organization tool

[11:50 Sun,15.August 2021   by Thomas Richter]

Adobe has announced that it will discontinue the development of its tool for organizing raw video material and will no longer make it available for download as an up-to-date app as of September 8. This will not affect existing users for the time being - the tool can still be used, but technical support will end on September 8, 2024.

Adobe-Prelude

Adobe had introduced Prelude in 2012 as part of Creative Suite 6 as an ingest and logging tool for tagging media with metadata for search, post-production workflows and footage management in close collaboration with Adobe Premiere Pro. With its help, freshly shot clips could be imported, transcoded if necessary, sifted through and tagged by metadata, and an initial rough cut can also be done. Adobe had Prelude, however, already since 2018 no longer further developed, the end was therefore perhaps not entirely unexpected.

Here is Adobe&s official statement:

Farewell to Adobe Prelude.

Video technology continues to evolve. We are discontinuing Adobe Prelude in order to work more on solutions for the future. As of September 8, Adobe Prelude will no longer be available for download. Users who have already downloaded the program will still be able to use Prelude. Technical support will also be available until September 8, 2024.

Since its launch in 2012, Adobe Prelude has been instrumental in pre-production of video projects, providing us with valuable insights. We continue to work to optimize preproduction workflows in Premiere Pro and welcome feedback. Thank you for using Prelude.

For those who haven&t installed Prelude yet but still want to try it out, you can still do so: Prelude remains selectable and downloadable via Creative Cloud Desktop under the "Show Older Apps" menu item.

As a replacement for Prelude, Adobe recommends users consolidate their preproduction workflow using Premiere Pro, which supports camera media ingest and marker workflows for basic logging. The sometimes necessary transcoding of camera footage can be done via Adobe Media Encoder. Adobe&s statement, however, gives hope that Premiere Pro could get new ingest, media organization and workflow features in the future.
