Apple Final Cut Pro update brings duplicate detection and voice isolation via AI

Apple has unveiled new versions of Final Cut Pro (10.6.2), Motion (5.6.1) and Compressor (4.6.1) that, in addition to optimized playback and GPU performance for all applications on the new Mac Studio with M1 Max/M1 Ultra unveiled about a month ago, bring some interesting new features, especially for Final Cut Pro.

The most important new features in Final Cut Pro 10.6.2

Long requested by FCP editors, the now-implemented Duplicate Detection feature, which identifies media that is in a project more than once using highlighted clip areas or the timeline index. The new Voice Isolation feature, detects background noise via DeepLearning algorithms and allows you to adjust its volume to make voices in the foreground clearer. In addition, the update brings numerous improvements to the Motion Tracker.

Final Cut Pro as well as Motion and Compressor have been adapted to the hardware of the

Mac Studio with M1 Max/M1 Ultra. For example, Final Cut Pro can now play up to 56 streams of 4K ProRes 422 or 18 streams of 8K ProRes 422 on the M1 Ultra for the first time. And recoding from ProRes RAW to ProRes 422 using Compressor is now over 12 times faster on the Mac Studio than on the 27-inch iMac, recoding ProRes 444 8.5x faster.

Final Cut Pro 10.6.2 also includes these additional fixes and improvements:
- In the Tracker Options screen control, you can attach titles and graphics to existing tracker data.
- In the Tracker Options screen control, choose Attach to Tracker or Offset from Tracker.
- The tracking editor is automatically displayed in the timeline when an object is tracked.
- Objects attached to a tracked object can be scaled uniformly in X and Y sizes.
- Improves reliability when using the object tracker with clips that do not match the frame rate of the project.
- Improves reliability when using the object tracker in linked storylines.
- Improves reliability when using Send to Compressor with a composite clip that contains Object Tracker data.
- Improves functionality when selecting photos and videos with the Photo Browser.
- Improves functionality when dragging photos and videos from the Photos app directly into Final Cut Pro.
- Improves performance when drawing waveforms.
- Improves reliability when playing audio from a clip that is reversed in the Timeline.
- Fixes an issue where video scopes sometimes appear monochrome.
- Improves reliability when removing effects from retimed clips.
- Fixes an issue where opening a composite or multicam clip in a connected storyline sometimes displays an empty timeline.
- Resolves an issue where opening a project after changing the startup timecode sometimes displayed a blank timeline.
- Improves reliability when using the keyboard to navigate to subtitles associated with a secondary storyline.
- Includes an alpha channel when exporting a PNG file from the Timeline.

All the new features in Motion 5.6.1

- Use the new Sliced Scale filter to divide an image into slices to avoid distortion when scaling.
- Optimized playback and graphics performance for M1 Max and M1 Ultra on the new Mac Studio.
- Added support for the Korean language.

Motion 5.6.1 also includes the following additional bug fixes and enhancements:
- Resolved an issue where the media reconnect window might not respond.
- Fixes an issue where media sharing could cause banding.
- Adds a Scaling Mode menu to select a scaling method when using a match move behavior.
- Improves playback and sharing performance when working with 3D objects on Mac computers running Apple Silicon.

All the new features in Compressor 4.6.1

- View the transparency of a video (requires macOS Monterey 12.3 or later), the aspect ratio of an output, and changed properties of the source media in the preview area.
- Rotate and flip video files with new video properties in one setting.
- Optimized transcoding performance for M1 Max and M1 Ultra on the new Mac Studio.
- Korean language support added.

Compressor 4.6.1 also includes the following fixes and improvements:
- Added the ability to drag and drop media from the Photos app.
- Added the ability to encode files in HEVC 10-bit 4:2:2 on Mac computers running Apple silicon under macOS Monterey 12.3 or later.
- Fixes an issue where an alias could not trigger transcoding with a watch folder.
- Adds a HEVC HTTPS live streaming destination with updated resolutions and bitrates.
- Adds a new automatic bitrate preset for HTTPS live streaming in the Video Settings inspector.
- Fixes an issue where selecting a Final Cut Pro project with a generator in the Batch window might not work as expected.
- Fixes an issue where creating a new job from a selected output might fail.
- Adds a warning when system settings can prevent jobs from being submitted.
