Apple has developed its own 8K 3D camera for Vision Pro

[11:36 Tue,15.October 2024   by Thomas Richter]

Apple just introduced a whole series of new content, produced exclusively and for free for its Mixed Reality Headset Apple Vision Pro. Among the episodes, films, series, and music performances in the Apple Immersive Video format, "Submerged" particularly stands out, marking the first scripted short film, whose "Making-of" clip incidentally showcases a new 3D camera. YMCinema has investigated and discovered that it is very likely a special stereoscopic 3D camera developed by Apple itself and already patented in 2021.

There is no official information from Apple, but the patent mentions two sensors – with an estimated size between Micro-Four-Thirds and Super 35mm. Additionally, it’s clear that the camera must be able to capture 2 x 8K video for Apple Immersive Video with a 180-degree field of view, along with Spatial Audio using multidirectional microphones.

The new content produced by Apple for the Vision Pro is intended to make Apple&s high-quality but expensive mixed-reality headset more appealing to potential buyers, of which there is still a shortage, LINK and to solve the chicken-and-egg problem – that is, it isn’t worth it for external producers to create special content for the Apple Immersive Video format if there aren’t enough users yet, and on the other hand, the lack of content deters potential buyers.

The "Submerged" short film, which was extremely elaborately produced for a short film, is reminiscent of the German hit production "Das Boot," as the film also takes place in a submarine during World War II. However, through the immersive experience offered by Vision Pro, the oppressive tightness of the submarine during an attack, including water intrusion, is meant to feel even more intense than in a conventional film. With the 16-minute short film directed by Austrian-Swiss Oscar-winner Edward Berger ("All Quiet on the Western Front," "Conclave"), Apple aims to convince filmmakers to shoot specifically for Vision Pro, helping to "expand the boundaries of visual storytelling."

The 180° field of view presents new challenges for filmmakers: how do you guide the viewer’s focus on the action? What is visible outside the directed field of view when the viewer freely explores the scene with head movements? How do you hide microphones, lighting, or other parts of the film equipment from view?

In a first review, Victoria Song in The Verge expresses mixed feelings about "Submerged" – a film via Vision Pro is an extremely immersive but also, by definition, solitary viewing experience.

It is unclear why Apple went through the trouble of developing its own camera for this purpose when the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive, a camera specifically built for Vision Pro and capable of shooting in the Apple Immersive Video format, is already available.

The Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive is based on the new URSA Cine platform and features a fixed, custom-designed stereoscopic 3D lens system with two 8K image sensors that can capture a dynamic range of 16 stops. The sensor delivers a resolution of 8,160 x 7,200 pixels per eye with a dynamic range of 16 stops.

Whether the immersion offered by the Apple Vision Pro will indeed "change the future of filmmaking" remains to be seen. While the Vision Pro is similar to other headsets, its image quality is significantly better – although it may enable a special immersive experience, the extremely high price of around 4,000 euros prevents it from reaching beyond www.nasdaq.com/articles/apple-vision-pro-sales-likely-slow-down-2024-bloomberg#:~:text=(RTTNews)%20%2D%20Market%20intelligence%20company,quarter%20since%20its%20U.S.%20launch. (a niche audience), a reality that even a cheaper, slimmed-down version expected around mid-2025 will likely not change. We predict that the Apple Vision Pro will never reach the popularity of the iPhone – contrary to Apple’s hopes, the Vision Pro has never achieved hype status since its launch.

The future of Apple&s new 3D camera also hangs in the balance with the fate of the Vision Pro – whether Apple will ever mass-produce it or if it will remain a prototype is still uncertain.
