Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive is coming - 8K 3D for 30k

[11:02 Wed,18.December 2024   by blip]

Blackmagic Design plans to deliver the first units of the URSA Cine Immersive towards the end of the next quarter - the world's first commercial camera system specifically for recording Apple Immersive Video for the Vision Pro can be pre-ordered now for 29,995 dollars. With the help of an update for DaVinci Resolve Studio, Blackmagic aims to deliver a complete end-to-end workflow for the new format.
The camera will then be offered to a wider range of users in the course of 2025.

The announced in June Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive is - unlike the Cine 12K - equipped with a custom-made fixed focal length that is already installed in the camera body; Blackmagic does not specify the focal length in millimetres. (The field of view of the Vision Pro is 180°.) The sensor delivers a resolution of 8160 x 7200 pixels per eye with synchronization at pixel level; the dynamic range is said to be 16 f-stops. The setup enables the recording of immersive 3D content at 90fps in a single file.

The custom-made lens system specifically for the large format sensor of the URSA Cine is designed to deliver high-precision position data that is read out and stored during production. The projection data of the immersive lens, calibrated and stored on the device side, is available in post-production via the Blackmagic RAW file.

The Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive comes with 8 TB of internal network-compatible storage - recording can be done directly to an included Blackmagic Media Module, and media can be synchronized in real time with Blackmagic Cloud and DaVinci Resolve media bins. The 8TB should be enough for over 2 hours of Blackmagic RAW in 8K and immersive, stereoscopic 3D.

The camera features 12G-SDI outputs as well as connections for 10G Ethernet, USB-C, XLR audio and more. The fold-out monitor is equipped with a 5-inch HDR touchscreen on one side and an external, color status LCD on the other. On the right-hand side, the camera has a “station” specially dedicated to assistance in the form of a second 5-inch HDR touchscreen. At the rear, the camera has an 8-pin Lemo socket that works with 24V and 12V mains adapters. This means it can be used with existing mains adapters, batteries and accessories.

The Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive comes with a 250W power adapter and a B-mount battery plate, allowing users to use high voltage batteries from a wide range of manufacturers such as IDX, Blueshape, Core SWX, Bebob and others. The camera has a sturdy top handle, antennas for high-speed Wi-Fi, a base plate, 24V power supply and a high-voltage B-battery plate for quick setups.

To simplify the editing of immersive video throughout the post-production workflow and ensure a consistent look of images from set to post-production, a new Blackmagic RAW Immersive file format is released. It also supports Blackmagic's media synchronization. Blackmagic RAW files store camera parameter data, lens data, white balance, information from a digital clapperboard and custom LUTs.

DaVinci Resolve Studio with Apple Immersive Video support

A new version of DaVinci Resolve Studio will be available with the release of the URSA Cine Immersive camera to enable editing of footage shot with the camera. It will support editing, color correction and the production of Apple Immersive Video for viewing in Apple Vision Pro.

Key features include a new immersive video viewer that allows you to pan, tilt and tilt clips as well as view them on a 2D monitor or Apple Vision Pro glasses for an immersive editing experience. In addition, transformations rendered by Apple Vision Pro can be bypassed using FCP XML metadata, giving editors clean master files. To complete the workflow, export presets support quick outputs to a package that can be viewed directly on Apple Vision Pro.

Cheaper Apple Vision Pro next year?

Apple's mixed reality headset was launched on the American market in February and is available in this country at since July for 3,999 euros. According to reports, however, the rather expensive Apple Vision Pro is selling less well than Apple had hoped, so it seems that production was scaled back in the fall. A slimmed-down, cheaper model is expected to be launched next year, which should also breathe new life into the production of 3D content for the Vision Pro.
