Canon is launching a new standard zoom lens for portraits, street and travel photography. The Canon RF 28-70mm F2.8 IS STM for full-frame format offers a constant aperture of f/2.8 over the entire zoom range and is compact and lightweight to support mobile use. When retracted, it measures 92.2mm in length and weighs approx. 490 grams.

For filmmakers, focus breathing should be effectively suppressed with compatible cameras, and the STM drive should work practically silently when focusing. The optical image stabilization of up to 5.5 exposure stops is also a plus for video recordings. The lens is also weather-resistant and, according to Canon, has been developed with reliability under harsh conditions in mind.
The optical construction comprises 15 lenses in 12 groups, including 2 UD lenses and 2 aspherical lenses made of glass. The close focusing distance at maximum wide angle is 0.27m (0.24m with manual focusing). There is a ring for lens control, which can be assigned different settings, including focus, shutter speed, aperture and ISO value. The aperture consists of 9 blades.
Price and availability
The new standard zoom lens is expected to be available in September 2024 for €1,299.00, making it a comparatively affordable alternative to the Canon RF. However, it is also not quite as wide-angle as the Canon RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM, as well as less fast than the RF 28-70mm F2L USM for professional requirements. Canon has opened its new RF mount for APS-C, but not for full-frame format, meaning that users cannot switch to cheaper third-party suppliers.
