RED had already launched an S35 version of its V-RAPTOR camera in November last year, but in a limited edition. Now the V-RAPTOR 8K S35 is officially available, as is the larger V-RAPTOR XL 8K S35. With the new additions, RED aims to appeal to the live event as well as broadcast environment, in addition to wildlife filmmakers and classic cinema productions.

While the large format versions of the two cameras offer the possibility to shoot in an S35 window, reducing the resolution to 6K due to cropping, the new dedicated S35 cameras let you shoot at full 8K resolution. With the same number of sensor pixels (35.4MP) in a smaller space - RED specifies the sensor area as 26.1mm x 13.8mm - the pixel size naturally drops, from 5μm to 3.2μm.

Dynamic range is said by RED to be 16.5+ stops, half a stop below the large-format V-Raptor. Readout is said to be as fast as the larger sensors. In the V-RAPTOR XL 8K S35, the electronic ND system is also available with its 1/4, 1/3 as well as full stops.
Except for the installed sensor, the two new V-RAPTOR (XL) S35 models are identical to their respective large-format counterparts - both in terms of form factor and features. These include 16bit REDCODE Raw and/or ProRes recording, 120fps in 8K / 240fps in 4K, a V-Lock or Gold Mount battery interface, an integrated control display, WLAN, support for live 8K workflows via RED Connect, and more. The smaller model is equipped with a locking RF mount, the large XL version with PL mount.
The cameras will again be available in a variety of packages, with the V-RAPTOR 8K S35 starting at ,995 in price and the V-RAPTOR XL 8K S35 at ,995.
