DJI Air 3S comes with better obstacle detection via LiDAR

DJI has now unveiled the Air 3S, which has been significantly improved in several aspects compared to the previous model. It features a dual-camera system with a 1" primary camera and a mid-range 70 mm telephoto camera, omnidirectional obstacle avoidance that works even at night thanks to new sensors, and a large enough internal memory to eliminate the need for microSD cards for storing video footage.

The 50-megapixel wide-angle camera with an f/1.8 24mm lens captures 4K HDR at 60fps, and in slow motion mode, it records 4K at 120fps in H.264/H.265. The sensor of the 48 MP mid-telephoto camera with an f/2.8 70mm lens is 1/1.3" in size and offers 3x optical zoom, also recording at up to 4K/120fps. Both cameras offer up to 14 stops of dynamic range and support the 10-bit D-log-M/HLG format. The maximum ISO has been increased to 12,800 and in color modes D-Log M and HLG to 3,200, providing more brightness and detail in urban night scenes.
Recordings can be saved not only on microSD cards up to 512 GB but also on the internal memory, which is now significantly larger at 42 GB (previously 8 GB). The recorded files can be transferred from the Air 3S to a smartphone even when the drone is powered off.

The new free panorama mode of both cameras allows seamless creation of panoramic shots by stitching together multiple images with a manually selected subject or area. The well-known intelligent flight modes like Waypoint, QuickShots, MasterShots, FocusTrack, Spotlight 2.0, ActiveTrack 5.0, Point of Interest 3.0, and shooting modes like Night Mode, Hyperlapse, Slow Motion, and SmartPhoto 3.0 are also supported. The DJI Air 3S also introduces a new subject focusing feature, which keeps the subject sharp even in manual flight or when it moves off-center. The maximum flight time remains nearly the same as the Air 3 at 45 minutes. With DJI&s O4 video transmission system, 10-bit video at 1080p/60fps can be transmitted over a distance of up to 20 kilometers.

Obstacle Detection via LiDAR and TOF Infrared Sensor
The Air 3S is the first DJI drone equipped with forward-facing LiDAR. It also features downward-facing TOF (Time-of-Flight) infrared sensors and six vision sensors (two each on the front, back, and bottom), enabling omnidirectional obstacle avoidance even at night. For the first time in the DJI Air series, the Air 3S uses the APAS 5.0 (Advanced Pilot Assistance System) obstacle detection and avoidance system, known from the Mavic 3 drones, to detect and automatically avoid obstacles omnidirectionally. Thanks to real-time visual positioning, the DJI Air 3S remembers flight routes when there is enough light and can return to the starting point even without a satellite signal using the improved intelligent RTH (Return to Home) function.

The charging station supports PD fast charging and a power accumulation function, allowing the remaining power of multiple low-charge batteries to be transferred to the battery with the highest remaining charge.
Pricing and Availability
The DJI Air 3S is now available and costs 1,099 euros with the RC-N3 remote controller. As the DJI Air 3S Fly More Combo (DJI RC-N3), which includes the DJI RC-N3 remote controller, ND filter set, two additional batteries, a battery charging station, a shoulder bag, and more, it costs 1,399 euros. With the DJI RC 2 remote controller, which features its own bright 700 nits 5.5" 1080p display, the price is 1,599 euros.
