Especially when working professionally with video, a second monitor is often very useful - but if you are travelling and working with a laptop, you have to do without it. The kickstarter project DUO by students at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) aims to remedy this situation with a lightweight second display that is attached to the notebook and extends the work surface by a second, foldable mobile screen.
The project is still running for almost 3 weeks and is already (over-)financed - so it will be realized. The DUO Display costs 189 dollars (approx. 160 Euro) - to be delivered from January 2019 The DUO Display connected via USB sits in a housing, which is magnetically attached to the back of the monitor - if necessary the actual DUO Display is then pulled out laterally and is then ready for use.
The DUO display weighs only 700 grams, measures 12.5" (31.75cm) and has a resolution of 1,920 x 1080 pixels at a brightness of 300 nits. The second screen can be mounted so that it can be extended to the right or left of the notebook display - it can be rotated 270° to find the optimum viewing angle. Via an own USB driver the screen signals are converted via USB-eDP for the display - how well this works also with fast change of screen contents will probably only prove a test - the creators seem to be convinced of the abilities of their product in any case.
DUO Dual Display for Notebooks
The DUO display can also be folded down and used as a presentation display that simply mirrors the screen content. It is connected via USB and should work on any notebook (Windows, Mac, Linux and even Android and Chrome) that has a USB port. It is even possible to use several DUOs on one laptop if there are enough USB ports. The power comes via USB from the laptop - the DUO display is therefore not dependent on any additional power source.
