Dell has released updates to its Precision 5000 and 7000 series of mobile workstations, which have not only been redesigned and are now almost frameless (Precision 5500 and 5750), but also all feature a more up-to-date, more powerful interior. While the 5000 models tend to be more of the latter in terms of power/weight/size balance, the 7000 Precisions tend to be more of the latter in terms of processing power and PC-like full equipment.

In addition to the 15-inch Precision 5500, Dell is adding a 17" model to the Precision 5000 series for the first time, the 5750 - both are based on Dell&s XPS laptops (the XPS 9500 and 9700 models), but increase their performance data to workstation level.
The new models are now configurable with Intel Comet-Lake-H i9 and Xeon 8-core CPUs of the new, 10th generation, can be equipped with a maximum of 64GB (ECC) RAM and have two M.2-2280 slots for NVMe SSDs with a maximum of 2TB (with RAID support). In the graphics card configuration, a maximum of a Nvidia Quadro T2000 (with 4GB VRAM) can be selected for the 15" model, and a Quadro RTX 3000 (with 6GB) for the 17" model.

As display (in 16:10 format) either a WUXGA (1.920 x 1.20) panel with 100% sRGB coverage or a Touch UltraHD 4K panel with 100% AdobeRGB color space and a brightness of 500 nits each can be configured.
The interfaces of both models include two Thunderbolt 3 and one USB-C 3.2 Gen2 port (Precision 5500) or four Thunderbolt 3 ports (Precision 5750) - one restriction, however, concerns the interfaces of the two: HDMI as well as USB-A and RJ45 Ethernet ports have been saved - if you need them, you have to use an external docking station via Thunderbolt 3. An SD card reader is on board, though.
The redesign not only ensures a better frame/display ratio, but also a larger touchpad and flatter profile - the 5500 is only 11.6 mm high and weighs 1.84 kg.

Dell has also reduced the weight of these two new models somewhat - both are about 19% smaller than their predecessors due to a narrower lateral frame around the display with the same screen size.
Both models can now be configured with Intel&s Comet-Lake-H i9 and Xeon 8-core CPUs of the new, 10th generation and a maximum of a powerful Nvidia RTX 5000 with 16 GB VRAM. The two differ in the number of possible M.2-2280 SSDs - the 15" 7550 offers three, the 17" 7750 even has four SSD slots, which can be equipped with a maximum of 2 TB NVMe SSDs.

However, the option of equipping them with traditional HDDs via a 2.5" bay has been dropped - this could be somewhat painful for some video editing professionals in view of the still large price difference between SSDs and HDDs, especially with high storage capacities. Both can be equipped with a maximum of 128 GB RAM.
In opposition to the new 5000 series models, Dell still relies on "old" interfaces like HDMI, Mini DisplayPort RJ45 Ethernet and USB-A (with USB 3.1 Gen2) in the 7000 series. Otherwise, two Thunderbolt 3 are offered.
Various options are available as displays: Panels with 1,920 x 1,080 pixel resolution and 200 nits brightness plus 45% NTSC coverage or 500 nits and 100% DCI-P3 up to HDR UltraHD (3,840 x 2,160) with 100% AdobeRGB and optionally 500 nits or 800 nits brightness.
Dell has not yet given any prices or a release date for the new models.
