The Deutsche Kinemathek offers a new selection of German films on a specific theme online for free approximately every three months. Currently, these are nine films under the motto "Cult and Quirky" from the years 1971 to 1990, for example Christopher Schlingensief&s "Das deutsche Kettensägenmassaker" (The German Chainsaw Massacre), the German answer to the underground cult film Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the colorful GDR science fiction film "Staub dr Sterne" (Dust to the Stars), or the James Bond parody "Serenade für zwei Spione" (Serenade for Two Spies).
![]() Agents, cosmonauts, megalomaniacs, and failed existences dance, sing, and murder in nine films that move between cult, genre, and trash. It&s always about the big picture: love, sex, the abysses of the soul, and saving the world from evil. Sometimes pathetic, sometimes comical, but in any case quirky – the stories use genre conventions as a playground for visual and narrative experiments. The 11th edition of "Selects" playfully complements the film program of this year&s Berlinale retrospective, which presents German genre films from the 1970s. Until the end of April 2025, the following films are available: - **Das deutsche Kettensägenmassaker** (Germany 1990, Director: Christoph Schlingensief, 63 min, English subtitles, FSK: 16) - **Anita – Tänze des Lasters** (West Germany 1987, Director: Rosa von Praunheim, 87 min, English subtitles, FSK: 16) - **Fucking City** (West Germany 1982, Director: Lothar Lambert, 89 min, English subtitles, Age rating: 16+) - **Macumba** (West Germany 1982, Director: Elfi Mikesch, 88 min, English subtitles, FSK: 18) - **Das ist ein Ende** (West Germany 1981, Director: Ulrike Pfeiffer, 15 min, English subtitles, Age rating: 6+) - **Belcanto oder Darf eine Nutte schluchzen?** (West Germany 1977, Director: Robert van Ackeren, 95 min, English subtitles, FSK: 12) - **Im Staub der Sterne** (GDR 1976, Director: Gottfried Kolditz, 96 min, English subtitles, FSK: 6) - **Der Mann, der nach der Oma kam** (GDR 1971, Director: Roland Oehme, 93 min, German, no subtitles, FSK: 6) - **Serenade für zwei Spione** (West Germany 1965, Director: Michael Pfleghar, Alberto Cardone, 85 min, German, no subtitles, FSK: 16) Deutsche KinemathekThe Deutsche Kinemathek is one of Europe&s leading institutions dedicated to the audiovisual heritage.
