Dronut X1: The drone for indoors

A compact drone with a very special donut design has been unveiled by Boston-based company Cleo Robotics, the Dronut X1 (Dronut: Donut plus Drone). Very reminiscent of designs from science fiction movies, the drone is specifically designed for indoor commercial operations (such as inspecting inaccessible manholes or dangerous locations) and can also be flown close to people or objects without risking harm to itself or others from its propellers, as its two rotors are well protected inside.

Weighing only 425 grams and measuring 16.5 x 10 cm, about the size of a palm, this drone is entirely intended for special applications and is accordingly well equipped (which unfortunately also accounts for its high price of ,800). For example, the Birotor drone has both a 4K camera that can stream live and a global shutter camera for navigation, powerful LED headlights for operating in dark spaces, and a 3D LiDAR system that continuously laser scans the environment and uses its Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor to create an internal 3D model for navigation and collision avoidance. This is especially important since it cannot rely on GPS signals for navigation indoors.

Since it is intended for indoor use, the limited remote control range of 1km and flight time of only 12 minutes does not bother as much as outdoor models. Also, its maximum flight speed of 15km/h is quite low, but probably sufficient for the purpose. A full charge of the Dronut X1 takes 40 minutes, but the battery is also replaceable for a . The remote control uses a very classic (Android) smartphone along with the associated app as a display for the live video feed in HD quality and for setting the flight and recording parameters.
