The presentation of the Blackmagic Pyxis 6K caused quite a stir at the NAB, but the camera is still a long time coming. But maybe not that long, because now the manufacturer has put an official clip with sample footage online. The footage was shot by DoP Patrick O&Sullivan, but unfortunately the lenses used are not disclosed. The Pyxis is offered in three mount versions, L-, EF- and PL-, so there is a wide range of glass to choose from.
As we assume that the camera has the same sensor as the Cinema Camera 6K, we expect few surprises in terms of image quality. The special thing about the Pyxis is rather the form factor - Blackmagic advertises the box-format camera as the most versatile riggable full-frame digital film camera on the market. Thanks to new side plates (standard, SSD and rosette plate), the camera setup can be configured very differently depending on the application.
In this respect, BTS footage would almost have been the more interesting choice - there are many different perspectives from close to the ground to just below the ceiling, and there are also some drone shots in the clip, once the camera is mounted on a vehicle, then filmed in a car, etc.
As with the Cinema Camera 6K, the Pyxis full-frame sensor has a native resolution of 6048 x 4032 pixels, an internal optical low-pass filter, dual native ISO and 13 f-stops of dynamic range. The Pyxis also records up to 36fps with 6048 x 4032 pixels in 3:2 with open gate (full sensor area) or 60 fps with 6048 x 2520 in 2.4:1 and 60 fps with 4096 x 2160 in 4K DCI. Only recording in Blackmagic RAW formats is supported, except for H.264 FHD proxies.
Blackmagic Pyxis 6K in 3 variants
The housing of the Pyxis 6K measures 106 x 119 x 151mm, with a 4-inch HDR touchscreen on the left-hand side. Sony BP-U batteries are provided as power supply. Two card slots for CFexpress are available, as well as USB-C for connecting an external data carrier, two SDI ports (1x 12G SDI Out, 1x REF in / Timecode In), 1x Mini XLR Analog Audio In, 1x 3.5mm Stereo Input and 1x 3.5mm Headphone Out. Bluetooth and an Ethernet connection are also on board.

There is also a USB-C port on the front specifically for connecting the new Cine EVF with OLED screen. It is mounted via rods and has 6 function buttons. It will be available as an option for 1,969 euros.
The Blackmagic Pyxis 6K was originally announced for June at a price of 3,245 euros for the L or EF version or 3,505 euros with PL mount. However, a delivery date is still open.
