At CES 2025 in Las Vegas, the VideoLAN team, the non-profit organization behind the popular VLC Media Player, demonstrated an extremely interesting and useful new feature: automatic subtitling and real-time translation. The new technology is based on open-source AI models that run entirely locally on the user&s device – without an internet connection or cloud service, thus protecting privacy.
Real-time Subtitling and TranslationThe new features are made possible by the integration of OpenAI&s Whisper for transcribing spoken words and (according to Heise) Meta&s SeamlessM4T for translating more than 100 languages. At CES, live subtitling was demonstrated in diverse languages such as German, Hebrew, Japanese, and French. In addition to real-time subtitling, the generated subtitles can also be exported as .SRT files and post-edited (as they will likely still contain errors due to automatic transcription). This opens up new possibilities for both private and professional applications, such as accessible videos or the production of internationalized films. When the new features (and on which platforms) will be integrated into the player has not yet been communicated – the important question of which system requirements a platform must meet to offer the new AI functions in real time is also unanswered – but VideoLAN will soon provide more information in a blog post. However, the new features will be free, just like the VLC player itself. Auto-Dubbing Next?A next step, which the developers have already hinted at, would be automatic dubbing with translations in the original speaker&s voice, which should not be a problem, as there are already corresponding open-source tools for this functionality. The VLC Player – A Success StoryThe VLC Player, which saw the light of day in 1996, is one of the most successful open-source projects in the world (it has been downloaded over 6 billion times) and is funded solely by donations – without any advertising. It offers a multitude of features, including support for almost all audio and video formats, streaming, screen recording, a customizable user interface, expandable plugins, media conversion, and numerous audio and video filters. The VLC Media Player is available on all common platforms such as Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS, and Android. more infos at bei x.com deutsche Version dieser Seite: Kostenloser VLC Player erzeugt automatisch Untertitel für 100 Sprachen |
