Freefly Systems, renowned as pioneers of gimbals and manufacturers of high-speed cameras and professional drones, has introduced a special lighting drone that packs a punch. The quadcopter, named "Flying Sun 1000," utilizes four downward-facing 72-LED light panels with a total output of 3,333 watts, achieving a brightness of 300,000 lumens. This allows it to uniformly illuminate an area the size of Trafalgar Square in London (approximately 12,000 square meters) from above in just a few moments. ![]() Freefly Flying Sun 1000 Lighting Drone
The Flying Sun drone is based on the ![]() ![]() Freefly Flying Sun 1000 Lighting Drone Continuous Lighting via CableFor continuous lighting, however, it can also be connected to a power source on the ground via cable, allowing it to hover and illuminate for extended periods. It is certified for a nonstop flight of 24 hours for 7 days, and even then, it only needs to take a 15-minute inspection break before it can take off again. If the power source is, for example, in the form of a 5 kW generator or corresponding batteries mounted on a car, the light can also be easily moved. The actual brightness of the illuminated area depends on the flight altitude: an area of approximately 1,000 m² is illuminated with approximately 180 lux per m², and an area of 12,730 m² is illuminated with approximately 10.76 lux, thus transforming the night into day in specific locations. A major problem with such bright lighting is the high heat generated by the high amount of electricity used by the lights. Freefly relies on cooling the light panels through the propellers sitting above the lights, promising "thousands of hours" of light. ![]() Freefly Flying Sun 1000 Lighting Drone Freefly is targeting commercial and governmental users with the Flying Sun 1000 who need large-area illumination, for example, for disaster relief operations, construction work, or security measures. The advantages are obvious: lighting by drone can be done much faster and more flexibly than the time-consuming setup of large light masts including the laying of power cables. ![]() Freefly Flying Sun Lighting Drone In the hands of filmmakers or photographers, however, the Flying Sun 1000 could also be used for impressive night shots.
