Anyone who hoped that VR would slowly but surely gain a foothold as a new visual narrative medium will read this news with regret -- anyone who doubted it anyway may feel confirmed: with Jaunt, one of the big players is withdrawing from the decided VR area. The self-developed 24-eyed Jaunt ONE VR camera rig with global shutter sensors and 8K resolution has been delivering high-quality, immersive surround footage for several years, not only to Hollywood producers at Jaunt Studios. Jaunt has evolved into a B2B-focused company and will focus in the future on developing and providing augmented and extended reality technologies for brands and publishers via its Jaunt XR platform. Thus "immersive" technologies will continue to play an important role, but obviously less in the form of cinematic film experiences, but rather as add-ons for customers in search of "cutting-edge immersive content" for their media appearance. For example, Sky could be won for the platform www.jauntxr.com/news/sky-vr-studio-selects-jaunt-bring-its-immersive-content-library-life-2018/; the Sky VR app seems to rely on Jaunt for distribution (but apparently not for production). Since May, Skys Hold the World has been offering a guided tour through the collection of the Natural History Museum by Sir David Attenborough&s "Hologram". However, the recording and processing of volumetric video data will also seem to be part of Jaunt&s offer in the future, for example the creation of an avatar from an all-round recording of a person. The right technology was recently purchased for this in the form of Teleporter from Personify. Maybe one shouldn&t read too much out of this change -- although Oculus also said goodbye to content production over a year ago and closed its (www.oculus.com/blog/the-next-chapter-of-creative-development-in-vr/) Oculus Story Studio, this can also be interpreted as a sign that no special, manufacturer-operated studios are needed anymore for the production of immersive videos. And now that RED and Facebook are jointly developing the ultimate VR camera with 6 Degrees of Freedom, the gap that Jaunt ONE may leave behind will also close.
