Grass Valley EDIUS 9 - first insights at the // IBC 2017

It wasn&t enough for an official announcement with a corresponding press release, but interested parties could have an alpha version of the ninth version of EDIUS shown at the IBC. The main focus of the upcoming version is on a continuous, largely automated HDR workflow. For example, if the project timeline is based on an HDR output format such as REC2020 PQ, individual clips in other formats such as X-LOG or HLG can be automatically converted. SDR formats such as REC709 can also be largely automatically adjusted via color correction.
Otherwise, the wide format support was further enhanced. Soon there will be RED file support in the source browser, as well as import possibilities for the new Canon C200 RAW Light format. Cinema DNG and RAW stills now land in 10 bits after debayering on a 10 bit timeline and MP4/H. 264 export should soon be possible in 10 bits. The H. 264 export menu also has a checkmark for multiprocessor support. There will be some minor changes to the user interface that Grass Valley has implemented based on user feedback.

Only the workgroup version will now control a UHD 50/60p real-time output via third-party cards (including Blackmagic and AJA).
In the future, Edius will also run in the cloud and can therefore also be started in virtual environments on foreign servers. In this context, there are also new floating licenses that are not based on workstations but on actively used installations. A 10 user license can also be installed on 100 workstations as long as it is not used by more than 10 users at the same time.

Other new features were also shown, but it is not known whether they will be available at the beginning of the new version cycle 9. As with previous versions, Grass Valley will continue to provide many features in free 9. x. updates. But only if they work stable. Keywords cited in this context were closed caption/subtitles, background rendering and an extended motion tracker. Exact prices and availability are not yet fixed, but an official press release will be issued in October. Edius buyers who buy EDIUS today will get the corresponding version 9 as a free update. The German distributor already indicated that the price is unlikely to change significantly compared to the previous versions.
