Nvidia's upper and mid-range GPUs are to be updated by the end of the year at the latest. The fact that an upgrade will take place sooner rather than later can already be seen from the fact that retailers can no longer reorder some models such as the RTX 4090. Before you buy these now at the increased final price of over €2,000, you should perhaps wait for the RTX5090, which will probably have significantly better values.
It is now certain that this card will be equipped with 32 GB GDDR7 memory, which will also be connected via an exceptionally wide 512-bit memory bus. This should result in a memory transfer rate of 1,792 GB/s. Compared to the previous top model (RTX 4090), this is not only almost twice as fast but also slightly more memory (24 vs. 32 GB). However, the power consumption (600 vs. 450W TDP) and the price also increase: GPU augurs are currently expecting an introductory price of no less than 2,500 dollars/euros.
In the class below, however, there is much less movement to report, as the memory sizes are likely to stagnate here: The RTX 5080 will again only get 16 GB (256 bits) and the RTX 5070 is even expected to get ‘only’ 12 GB (192 bits) at launch. Nevertheless, the memory will be twice as fast thanks to DDR7, which is why the RTX 5080 will achieve 1,024 GB/s and the RTX 5070 will still achieve 672 GB/s.
Video editors in particular should therefore benefit from the faster memory. However, particularly large AI models will not be able to use this. Of course, it is also to be expected that the new generation will be offered at a higher price than its predecessors. The Resolve performance of the RTX 4090 will probably also be found in the RTX 5080, but hardly for less than 1,200 euros.
Especially as AMD has cancelled all upper-class graphics cards for the next generation. It will therefore be exciting to see up to what performance the AMD mid-range will be able to keep up - and of course at what price.
