"Remastured" is a project of the porn portal Pornhub, which uses Deep Learning technology to restore 20 old (including the oldest preserved at 135 years) erotic short films. We&ve reported on similar DeepLearning algorithm-based techniques before, such as the Lumière brothers& 1896 short film "Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat," one of the most famous films in early film history. ;)
This was upscaled to 4K using Topaz Labs  Video Enhance AI and the frame rate was interpolated from 16 to 60 fps via DAIN (Depth-Aware Video Frame Interpolation). Another version of the originally black-and-white film was subsequently given color via De-Oldify. And that&s exactly what Pornhub does: by combining various machine learning processes, ancient erotic films are upscaled to 4K 60fps and post-colored there. Theoretically, anyone could do this - the corresponding AI algorithms are relatively freely available - but the problem is the appropriate training material: all three methods (such as Gigapixel AI, DAIN and De-Oldify) rely on neural networks, more precisely GANs (Generative Adversarial Networks), which are trained on many thousands of examples to interpolate missing information based on learned probabilities. But in order to scale up, interpolate and colorize the specific images of old porn by AI, it also needs appropriate training material so that the algorithm can learn to "guess" the missing image information - be it image details, missing intermediate frames in films or colors of objects - based on its experience. But images of completely naked bodies including genitals are hardly represented in normal training material and therefore hardly learnable by the AI. ;) This is where Pornhub&s very special training corpus comes into play: Pornhub used 100,000 erotic videos and images from its rich inventory to train the algorithms. The common procedure is to artificially "age" the appearance of modern image material using appropriate filters (conversion to B/W, drastic reduction of the resolution, artificial image errors, reduction of the fps, ...) and then let the AI try to restore the lost image information as well as possible in a trial and error process - the error-free original material then serves as a benchmark for whether one attempt is better or worse than another. Pornhub wants to remind you that erotic films (whereby the perception of what is erotic is of course strongly dependent on the respective time) have been part of film history from the very beginning.
