We had only just reported on the upcoming Oscars 2024 as an analog film festival when Kodak - perfectly in line with the analog film hype - presented the completion of its long-term project: a new Super 8 film camera with interesting digital technology.
Here is the standard analog Super 8 film look in the new image trailer of the Kodak Super 8 film camera
Although the new Kodak Super 8 film camera is loaded with traditional Super 8 (50 feet / 15m) cartridges, Kodak relies on digital technology for monitoring. A 4" LCD "Viewfinder" is used here, which can be folded out on the left side of the camera.
The camera set, supplied ready to shoot in a Pelikan case, contains a Kodak Tri-X (a black and white emulsion that we also greatly appreciate) and a 6 mm wide-angle lens 1:1.2 with C-mount thread. In keeping with its retro appearance, Kodak has equipped its new Super 8 film camera with exactly the same mount that many Super 8 filmmakers are probably already familiar with - after all, Beaulieu, Fujica and others also supported this old TV/industrial mount, for which, as far as we know, lenses are still being produced today, especially in the industrial sector.
In terms of design, the new Kodak Super 8 film camera is based on the consumer Super 8 cameras (less on the Beaulieus), which is perhaps the more appealing design for retro enthusiasts.
Unfortunately, the price of 5,495 dollars makes the new analog film tool a rather expensive affair. However, anyone who works professionally in the music video/advertising sector and occasionally has a Super 8 project to film may find their dream camera here.
We'll definitely be rummaging through old boxes - there must be an old Bauer Super 8 camera from the 70s somewhere ...
How do you feel about it? Would you like to take part in the analog hype or is the cell phone with the appropriate filter in your pocket enough?
