Panasonic has introduced a new firmware update for its renowned LUMIX S5II and S5II X full-frame cameras. The update focuses on the introduction of proxy shooting and support for Frame.io.
The simultaneous recording of a space-saving proxy file during video recording makes uploading to a cloud even more effective, as proxies significantly reduce data transfer time.
A proxy can also be used to reduce the load on an editing system and thus enable real-time playback in the timeline using the reduced clip copies. With the new firmware, there is no longer any need to create proxy clips separately on a PC or Mac using a dedicated application, which saves time and can directly increase editing efficiency.
The now native integration of Frame.io fits in perfectly with this. This now enables content from the camera to be uploaded directly to the cloud. This can be not only video proxies, but also photos. Using real-time sharing, review and editing functions, even remote teams can collectively access the files from the LUMIX S5II(X) in the cloud. For example, videographers can transfer proxy files to remote editors during an event while shooting, who in turn can immediately start editing in the (remote) timeline.
The firmware update is also said to offer significant improvements in autofocus performance. New autofocus modes, including animal eye and auto/motorcycle autofocus, should now ensure precise and reliable autofocus in an even wider range of shooting scenarios.
There are also further improvements to pre-burst shooting and electronic stabilization.
Both firmware updates will be available to download free of charge from April 22.
