The CS MSU Graphics & Media Lab, and then the Video Group has recently updated once again their infamous codec comparison. In addition to the 900-dollar study, there are again a free, online truncated version that delivers 199 pages still pretty hard to digest food. Who does not want to work through the document, here is the essence in brief: x264 is the best encoder (with virtually no questions asked), followed closely by MainConcocept, Elecad and Divx, which are by now all from the same house. In addition to viewing praised the Sandy Bridge is the best hardware transcoder transcoder, even approaches at high bit rates very close to the x264 results.
