Neuer DisplayPort 2.1 Standard bringt bessere Unterstützung für USB-C und USB4

[14:43 Sun,23.October 2022   by Thomas Richter]

The VESA has the new version 2.1 of the DisplayPort specification , which several important changes in terms of efficiency and compatibility. For example, DisplayPort 2.1 is now not only backward compatible with the previous version DisplayPort 2.0, but all already certified DisplayPort 2.0 products have already been certified for the more demanding DisplayPort 2.1 specification. This means that all GPUs, docking stations, monitors, cables (or other products) certified for DisplayPort 2.0 now also meet the more advanced requirements of the DisplayPort 2.1 standard.

Per DisplayPort cable or USB-C

.
In addition, the new specification 2.1 is supposed to ensure that all its defined functions are independent of whether the connection is made via a DisplayPort cable, via USB-C (using the DisplayPort Alt Mode) or tunneled via a USB4 connection. For example, support for VESA&s visually lossless Display Stream Compression (DSC) codec and VESA&s Panel Replay function have already been defined here since version 2.0. DSC bitstream support can reduce DisplayPort transport bandwidth by more than 67 percent without visual artifacts, while VESA&s Panel Replay capability can reduce DisplayPort tunneling packet transport bandwidth by more than 99 percent when running Panel Replay operation.

Better DisplayPort Bandwidth Management

.
In addition, DisplayPort 2.1 has gained a new DisplayPort bandwidth management feature that allows DisplayPort tunneling to coexist more efficiently with other traffic over the USB4 connection. This efficiency allows multiple displays to be driven via USB-C - whether using Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 - in parallel for data transfer and power to different devices over just one cable.

VESA-DP40-80-Cables
For DisplayPort certified DP40 and DP80 cables.

Specifications for FullSize and Mini DisplayPort cables have also been updated. Thus, DisplayPort 2. 1 enable improved capabilities and longer cable lengths up to 2 meters - VESA-certified DP40 cables support UHBR10 link rate (10 Gbps) with four lanes and provide a maximum throughput of 40 Gbps and VESA-certified DP80 cables support UHBR20 link rate (20 Gbps) with four lanes and provide a maximum throughput of 80 Gbps, which are sufficient for using 8K and even 10K resolutions at 60 Hz - using Display Stream Compression (DSC) compression technology, the resolution and refresh rate can be even higher.

DisplayPort 2.0/2.1 is still hardly supported

.
However, hardware support for DisplayPort 2.0/2.1 is still somewhat meager: currently, AMD&s Ryzen 6000H and Ryzen 6000U mobile processors can handle DisplayPort, as well as Intel&s Arc LE GPUs 2.0 in the UHBR10 configuration. AMD&s upcoming Radeon RX 7000 gaming graphics cards should also have DisplayPort 2.1 including UHBR20 mode, though. Nvidia&s new RTX 4000 GPUs, however, only support the old DisplayPort 1.4 standard. Unfortunately, this support for DisplayPort 2.0/2.1 via GPU is still purely theoretical since there are no displays on the market that also support these standards for display - according to VESA, however, several monitors are already certified now, even though they are not yet available.
